Shelter proposal in Monmouth enters planning phase

Monmouth is again being considered for a homeless shelter, this time at the former English Language Institute building off of Stadium Drive. Stock image.

This email was sent to Polk County Free Press by Cory Folkert of Church @ the Park. First, it was sent to the Western Oregon University community. It contains the “most relevant info about our proposed Monmouth shelter” Folkert stated.

Now, the email:

“Dear Campus Community:

As many of you know, Church @ the Park proposed adding a shelter in Monmouth for rural Polk County residents experiencing houselessness last fall on Clay Street.

Since then, they have been working on updating this proposal instead to add a smaller 14-bed shelter for vulnerable individuals, prioritizing seniors and women in the former English Language Institute building off of Stadium Drive.

Church @ the Park met with faculty and staff senate representatives, our student body president and other campus stakeholders a few weeks ago to provide an update on the plan. At that time, the plan was not finalized and they were waiting for more concrete information.

This week, we were notified that the proposal to add a 14-bed shelter off Stadium Drive in the former English Language Institute building will be moving from the exploration phase to the planning phase, which includes designing the renovation work and meeting with the City of Monmouth to understand the process and apply.

See the attached document for a more detailed timeline.

Church @ the Park will host two public webinar listening sessions on Thursday, May 16. The information is below. You are all encouraged to attend.

You can also get more information about this project on their website. They are currently working on updating their FAQ page to reflect the current project details.

The primary contact person for this project is DJ Vincent. Please reach out to him for additional information at dj.vincent@church-at-the-park.org."
