It was too much Philomath in Wednesday’s match against the Dallas High varsity girls tennis team.

The Warriors upended the host team, 7-1.

“Philomath has some very strong singles players,” Dragons coach Stephanie Green stated. Though “two of our doubles teams had some close matches, one winning in a tie-breaker.”

Winning that tie-breaker was Navy Latta and Evelyn Waite, who outlasted Logan Cook and Lacey Bacho (6-3,4-6,7-6(8), for the Dragons’ win.

Lorelie Schell and Lucie Oster held off Audrey Eastlund and Adraina Paz-Cavett of Dallas, 7-5, 7-5., in the day’s other close match.

Latta and Waite are number three doubles; Eastlund and Paz-Cavett are number two doubles.

Also in doubles, No. 1 Daniella Carlisle and Nadia Durski swept Haddie Rogers and Emma Blake in straight sets, as did No. 4 Maggie King and Lucy King against Sofia Lozano-Venegas and Kylie Land of Dallas.

“These matches early in the season are great opportunities to help in the process of developing our doubles teams to find the best fit of partners and what we can work on,” Green stated.

The Warriors swept all four singles. It was No. 1 Bailey Bell over Merle Nuber, No. 2 Adele Beckstead over Olea Green, No. 3 Megan Reese over Jenna Rogers, and No. 4 Elise Reese over Olivia Dezotell.

Nuber is a foreign exchange student from Germany.

“(She) is a great asset to the team, playing number one singles,” Stephanie Green stated. “We are looking forward to a great season.”

The Dallas roster is comprised mainly of seniors and sophomores.

“Unfortunately, we had a few seniors unable to come back this year. They are greatly missed,” Green added. “However, this has given the sophomores a chance to rise to the occasion of playing varsity level matches. It will be a great developmental year for them.”

Dallas travels to Stayton Monday, April 1, as their non-conference schedule continues. First serve is at 4 p.m.
